Join The Root in raising $1000 to expand the grant opportunities for BIPOC Applicants to join the Brattleboro Area Farmers Market!

Last fall, the Brattleboro Area Farmers Market applied for and received a GROW FALL2023 Grant from the New England Grassroots Environment Fund, Inc. They were awarded this grant to offer accessibility funds to cover the costs for a new BIPOC applicant to join the BAFM cooperative as a vendor. Acknowledging that “Starting a farm or other small business is much harder for people of color who have historically been left out of land and loan opportunities.”

The grant was only enough funding to support startup vendor costs for one new BAFM applicant. So we are asking our community for support to raise an additional $1000, to cover the full start-up costs for 2 new BIPOC prepared food vendors, and the membership fees for 2 additional BIPOC vendors. Allowing not one, but four new BIPOC vendors to receive support to join the BAFM for the 2024 season!

Would you be willing to make a donation to support these efforts? If so, donations can be accepted via therootsjc.org/donate with a follow up email to therootsjc@gmail.com confirming your donation amount with the subject line “BIPOC BAFM Fund” or a check and made out to The Root Social Justice Center- In memo BIPOC Farmer’s Market Vendors and sent to The Root at 28 Williams Street, Brattleboro, Vt 05301. If you have any questions about this initiative contact The Root at 802–451-0509.

BIPOC Woodworking Affinity SPaces with HatchSpace

In an effort to address the disparate harm inflicted on our BIPOC communities through the prison system, we have partnered with Vermont Legal Aid to provide FREE BIPOC expungement clinics.

These clinics will focus on Vermont criminal record expungements for Black Indigenous and People of Color (BIPOC) with the support of a BIPOC attorney. Spaces are limited with a priority on those seeking criminal record expungements for themselves or their loved ones.
Come work with an advocate to fill out the paperwork necessary to erase qualifying charges from your criminal record.
Under the law, most misdemeanors can be expunged, except for violent or sex offenses. Four types of felonies can also be expunged: Felony Burglary (not in a home), Grand Larceny, Prescription Fraud, and Criminal Mischief. All dismissed charges can be expunged and in most cases crimes committed before the age of 21 can be sealed.

Please note:
-We can only help with Vermont state charges
-DUIs and DWIs committed after 21 years old cannot be expunged

Want help clearing your record? Contact Interested? set up your confidential 30-minute appointment, please call Jeannette with Vermont Legal Aid
