We believe youth have valuable knowledge, ideas, and experiences to contribute, as well as the power to shape communities. Youth deserve a meaningful voice in the decisions that affect them, and youth leadership and perspectives are critical to imagining new possibilities and building a stronger future. As a Youth Board Member, you’ll bring your ideas, experiences, and perspective directly into The Root’s organizational leadership—helping guide our work, strengthen our community, and shape the decisions we make together!

Who are we looking for?

👉🏽 Youth ages 16–22 who are passionate about racial justice and community

👉🏽 Youth who want to grow their leadership skills and learn more about how a grassroots nonprofit organization works

👉🏽 Youth with lived experience of racial injustice, systemic oppression, or marginalization

👉🏽 Youth who have been involved with The Root’s programs or community—or who want to deepen their connection with The Root

👉🏽 Youth ready to share their perspectives, ask questions, bring new ideas, and help us imagine what comes next!

What’s the commitment?

✔️ Monthly Board meetings (90 minutes, virtual)

✔️ Some additional participation in projects or work sessions (about 1 hour/week)

✔️ Opportunities to participate in The Root’s events and community

✔️ Because meetings are virtual, Board Members can participate from anywhere in Vermont—and potentially from outside Vermont

This is a volunteer leadership role, and you don’t need previous Board experience. You’ll have the opportunity to learn about nonprofit leadership and governance, develop new skills, build relationships, and have a meaningful voice in an organization committed to racial justice and collective liberation.
